IMPORTANT!
- Use alcohol wipes to clean the knife or scissors between samples.
- Avoid exposing tissue samples to heat or sunlight.
- Use caution when opening vials to avoid spilling the preservative solution.
- Retain the sampling kit, return shipping label, and pre-paid postage strip for sample return.
- Store collected samples in the freezer until ready for return.
- If submitting optional photos for sampled ducks, please refer to your duckDNA data submission portal for instructions.
- Be aware that instructions for opening and resealing the kits have changed since initial testing. Each kit will now arrive sealed with packing tape. Please open the kit by carefully cutting the packing tape. DO NOT attempt to remove the tape, as this may damage the kit. Once sample collection is complete, please use the pre-attached, self-adhesive tape to tightly seal the box before shipping it back to the Lavretsky Lab.

When ready to collect tissue samples, the following steps should be taken for each duck:
- We advise waiting until within range of internet service before collecting tissue samples and entering information into your duckDNA account.
- When possible, seek assistance from another person to make sample collection easier.
- Wipe or wash hands to remove blood or dirt.
- Select a harvested duck for sample collection.
- Select an unused sample vial and carefully unscrew the cap. If collecting samples by yourself, the vial may be inserted upright into the provided hole in the sampling kit to avoid spillage.
- Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut a small section of the tongue approximately 1/4” × 1/4” in size. The tissue must fit loosely into the vial to ensure immersion in the preservative solution.
- Place the tissue sample into the vial and close the cap firmly.
- Secure the cap by wrapping one piece of clean Parafilm™ over the cap and onto the vial.
- STOP!! Before sampling another duck, enter information for this sample into your duckDNA account. Double-check that you entered the vial code correctly.
- Place the vial in the sampling kit.
- When ready to process another duck, clean the knife or scissors with an alcohol wipe.
- Repeat the above process for sampling additional ducks.
- Store collected samples in a freezer until ready for return shipping.
- Once all 5 samples have been collected, use the pre-attached, self-adhesive tape to tightly seal the box before shipping it back to the Lavretsky Lab, attaching the return shipping label and pre-paid postage strip to the exterior of the box.
REMINDERS:
- Store all collected samples in a freezer until ready for return shipping.
- Avoid storing in places where the sample kit may be crushed or damaged.
